One of my dear friends, Rachelle, has been what she calls a Curly Girl for years. This means her hair has a certain measure of wave/curl and she takes care of it with a certain system she describes here on the YLCF website. It intrigued me. Really? Washing your hair with nothing but water? Putting gobs of conditioner in and not rinsing it entirely out? NEVER USING A HAIRBRUSH? It sounded extreme, but intriguing. After all, my own hair is always in a dubious state of frizz...maybe I should try it! I tried washing my hair with only water this morning, and then putting in conditioner. *sigh*.
I am skeptical at best. I know it'll probably take repeated attempts for my hair to wake up and smell the coffee, but I really do want to try this at some point. Probably not right before I've got to be around people for a solid week though. ;)

Are you a Curly Girl? Have you tried this hair-care regime?

Um yes I have and it was a disaster. My hair got all greasy and tangled and dull looking. And my scalp got flaky and yucky. I would not suggest putting your hair through this!
ReplyDeleteI've read a lot about hair care and experimented even more and I've come to the conclusion that hair needs cleaning just don't shampoo it every day and use gentle shampoo. I wash my hair every other day and only brush it when it's wet. This cuts down frizz tremendously and is less damaging to the hair shaft.
Conditioner is still wonderful though! I use it every time I wash my hair on the lower portion of my hair and once a month I skip the shampoo and do my whole head in conditioner.
Ooops did I just give you a lecture about hair care? Sorry. Guess I got a little carried away i just got a little upset at the thought of you putting your beautiful hair under the curly girl method.
There I go again I better stop.
Well in that case (and because my hair looks awful right now, even when it's dry) and because it looked limp and less curly than usual, I believe I will take your word for it, Bertie! Gracious! I am quite vexed with the outcome of this first day. I will give it up till I feel like being disgruntled.
DeleteI also hear that your hair gets immune to certain shampoos so it can be good to switch shampoo brands every once in a while...that's what I hear...I'm not sure about that but it seems like that is my problem.
ReplyDeleteActually, I've tried switching shampoos and it really does seem to work for a time! Then it's time to switch again and I forget which one I've just used. ;)
DeleteMy big sister Moriah has curly hair and after a while of feeling frustrated because her hair was always poofy and frizzy after using a hair brush, she did some research (close to 6 years ago now) and found these two websites that have helped her tremendously!!

I have somewhat wavy hair, and about a year ago, I just got fed up with all the frizz, so I decided to stop using shampoo (even a homemade recipe we tried didn't work well). I just use Yes To Carrots conditioner and comb through my hair in the shower (with the conditioner in my hair) then I do a clarifying rinse made with green tea, let it sit a few moments and rinse my hair again with just water.
You will find your hair may get worse before it gets better, and if you really feel like you should use some kind of comb in your hair to start with, I would recommend getting a (VERY) wide-toothed comb...I have one we bought from Sally's Beauty Supply for I think $8 or $9.
Obviously you will need to do research and experiment with different products before finding some that work well with your hair.
Good luck with this curly girl routine!! And I will see you Sunday! :)
Some girls in my church do this. It worked for them. My hair is too stubborn and flat, but I tried it too.
ReplyDeleteAllons-y!
My hair has been looking what I call "not straight, not curly, messy!" When I was little my hair was pin straight.
ReplyDeleteSo I tried the conditioner this afternoon, and so far so good. My waves are much more defined, and I'm hoping it will eventually curl, after it has been completely moisturized.
I guess if you don't have any natural wave at all, then you would only have bad results from this technique.

If I were you, I would give the curly girl method a shot! :) My hair is so light and fine that any 'wave' gets pulled out by the extreme length. :P I tried the CurlyGirl routine when my mom tried it a couple years ago and found that it just didn't work that well... I only got a few ripples near the ends, and my scalp was a little too oily for my liking. But I think it might look amazing on your lovely hair! :)
ReplyDeleteI lightly shampoo and condition every other day. I've also found it is REALLY helpful to switch around shampoos, and sometimes even conditioner brands. It's not your hair being 'immune' - hair is dead except for the roots - but rather the buildup of chemicals and stuff in the shampoo if you use one brand too long. :)
