The Shrinkage Diaries: This Means War

Dear Figure,
I woke up this morning feeling very fine indeed, and with all the best intentions in the world of continuing on my happy road to health. After all, the when the sky is filled with fluffy, tangerine-colored clouds, who's to complain? Certainly not me. I got up and I did my arm exercises, courtesy of the Marines.

Yes. Laugh. Do.

They are called "Sungods" and "Chainbreakers" and, having never clapped eyes on a Marine whose arm muscles I didn't admire, I figured it couldn't hurt to try it out myself. I've done every day for nearly a week, and I am not too sore. I can't decide if this is good or bad. Does it mean I've got more muscles up there than anyone could guess from the look of it, or does it mean that I'm just not Marine-material? I suppose time will tell. A week is certainly not time enough to form Hawkeye-esque biceps and triceps.

I went down to breakfast, thinking that I would make something yummy. But there was a scheme afoot: the pantry is trying to hide you, dear Figure, from me! We need to do the grocery shopping and the only thing (pretty nearly) to be eaten were bagels. Lots of bagels. And I love bagels. But you would be proud of my dedication, Figure, and my ingenuity because do you know what I did instead? I invented a new breakfast packed with protein and potassium that I liked enough to toss into my repertoire for Shrinkage Breakfasts! I sliced a banana down the center, slathered it with All-natural peanut butter, and bedecked it with exactly six Ghirardelli 60% dark chocolate chips. This is yummy. This is nutritious. This fits the bill exactly, so I was happy. And to all the rest of you Vegans and Raw-foodists, this could easily be adapted to your diet!

I thought I'd snap a picture of the shadow of a figure I happen to possess right now, so as to document it's shrinking state till you, dear Figure, come to be. I thought it'd be nice to post a photo once a month of your progress in becoming a Proper Figure. I don't anticipate any Willow-Wandishness from you, but a nice Lumpless curve would not go amiss.

I was further tempted in my day of Shrinkage by a seductive, quad-layer chocolate cake that the whole rest of the family was partaking of. This is a very good chocolate cake (I know from experience) and if you knew just how good, you would certainly applaud me for my tenacity in resisting. I've been looking upon lots of lovely Figure-aiding things to cook on Pinterest, and I can't wait to write about them in the future. For now, I'm girding up my strength to resist further battle: I am off to a 21st birthday party where there will undoubtedly be more cake and ice-cream, and possibly lots of other fattening things. I will try to find the things I ought to eat, but if for some horrid reason there was none of it, then Moderation! (And Zumba and Just Dance 4 afterward, which is already scheduled and therefore very convenient to the Shrinking Me.)

Between teaching English Lit and cleaning the house for church, I did our work-out video (more on that in a later entry), and was careful to position myself directly in front of the TV so my head was balanced on Teresa Tapp's body. This enviable position is usually taken by Mama or Anna, but I got it today. Do you know what happens if you don't get this spot? You're stuck staring at yourself while exercising in the double glass doors. One side deludes you by making you look tall and slender, and the other is a horrifying picture of yourself if you failed Shrinkage and went quite in the opposite direction. With those two options before oneself, who would choose the chocolate cake?

I will have you, Figure, whether by hook or by crook, so don't gloat.

It's so unbecoming.

Yours,
      The Shrinking Me

  1. The soreness is caused by lactic acid forming in your arms. This is a natural part of form of resistance training. I would expect it to go down dramatically over the next week or two, provided you continue with the exercise. You should also allow at least two days out of seven to rest from resistance training. As you workout, you tear down your old, smaller muscles, which allows for shiny new strong and toned muscles to grow. But they need rest to do that.

    1. Thanks, Lucas! :) My goal is to do these sorts of exercises 5 days of the week, so I'll take your advice and rest for two. :) And cool fact about the lactic acid!

  2. You are so funny; what an awesome, positive way to look at things, and I love the title of "Shrinkage Diaries." I need to exercise too, but oh, my do I hate it. I get sooo bored, and I don't like sweating because I don't wash my hair everyday because it gets all dull and dry-so there is a vanity conundrum for you.

    1. Livia, I know what you mean. :P But it is worth it for me, mentally and physically, though I still greatly dislike sweating.

  3. Aww, you can do it Rachel darling!!! I'm so proud of you for resisting all that temptation around you! I did okay today myself...I've been trying to eat healthier, but thankfully so has the rest of the family, which really helps me a lot. Today I made a delicious creamy soup with no dairy in it but a small pad of butter in the entire 8+ cup batch of soup. Not too bad. :D And I'm resisting those bite-sized protein bites I made yesterday (sigh...they are *so* good). Good job on the work-outs - you are amazing girlie!!! {{Hugs}} Keep at it and you'll reap the rewards!

    Love and Hugs and prayers!

  4. You are completely awesome. I love your upbeat attitude! I know how hard it is to resist desserts and such at first (especially when your family is mowing chocolate cake in your presence--been there). But I also know that's it's more than worth it in the end.

Hang in there. The first couple months are the hardest, then--happily!--you'll cease to crave sugar. True story. It's been over a year since I've so much as touched a sweet and I don't miss them at all.

It's been a long journey for me. I've still got aways to go, but I am so much happier with my health and figure. You were very right when you said: it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. A healthy, happy, fit lifestyle. Best of luck to you, Rachel. I'm right here with you. ^.^

(Man, now I want to start a blog just to write about fun, random things like shrinkage and cooking and makeup and hairstyles. This did not start until I began frequenting your blog... Look at what you've done to me. :P)

  5. Rachel, while I can certainly identify with the struggles of having a family who eats such delightful things a chocolate cake, I believe my battle is of a different sort. As a girl living on her own, I'm required to do my own shopping, (which I actually hate doing), and therefore get to choose the things I want to eat for the next monthish. Of course, this can be easy AND hard. Because if something's not in the house- you don't eat it! Buuuuutttt, if it is- you eat ALL of it. :/
    haha.
I was working out today at PF doing my crunches and elliptical routine, and have actually noticed that while I used to be extremely sore after doing 50 crunches with 50lb weights- I am now not too sore, and just have that lovely "tightness" you get after you work out! It's quite heartening. :)
Keep it up!! (the writing and the shrinkage) haha

  6. Oh, Rachel, I so admire you in your chase for that all-elusive figure! I'm in rather the same predicament, but whatever chocolate cake I meet is kind enough to declare that I'm only a healthy weight and that just because I don't look good in skinny jeans doesn't mean I should deprive myself of Delicious Treats. But it looks like you're doing excellently. If you can say no to chocolate cake, any amount of self-control is possible!

  7. Hi Rachel!

HAHAHA- love this post title. You're so much fun. And you can do it! I need to jump back into all seriousness of purpose again too (I still have about 10 pounds to reach my optimum goal) and I've been so bad the past week it's not even funny. Well, it is a little funny. I actually consumed some valentine's chocolates, cake, and Lay's Potato chips. Oye Vey!!

I'm looking forward to more shrinkage diaries! What a great idea for a blog post series and how wonderful you'll feel when you accomplish your goals!

    Hugs,
    Julia

I must say, this post was very encouraging for me, as I'm on my own 'shrinkage journey' this year. A light-hearted look at a very important subject...thanks for sharing! I look forward to reading more of the 'shrinkage diaries'!

    God bless!

  9. Oo...can you please send me a link to the Marine arm exercises? I've noticed that my arms have gotten a little flabby over the winter and so I want to spruce them up before the weather calls for short-sleeves and sleeveless shirts all of the time!
