Dear Figure,
You have the right to remain silent during this post, because today I'm not talking to you at all (we're not speaking, 'member?) but to the other girls who have been lurking about asking just with what am I battering you into being? In short, what sorts of exercises have I been doing?
Well, there's several levels to this. First off, I'm a firm believer (and have discovered this by trial and error...mostly error.) that fresh air is an important part of feeling fit and fabulous. You can treadmill all day, you can do a Pilates workout, but till you are out in the sunshine and fresh air, you're not gonna feel very energized. So, one of my most common things to do is to take a long, brisk walk outside. Nothing fancy, but I try to keep my buttom tucked and my stomach in. The usual loop I do is about 4 miles. It takes me about an hour...maybe a tidge longer, depending on if my shins are hurting or not. No, don't freak out. I don't have anything wrong with my shins (that I know of) it's just that one of them has been hurting rather a lot and makes it uncomfortable to walk quickly for long distances. (I do it anyway.) One trick I've found to the whole "long walk" thing is this:
When you think you are finished, go a little further.
For a while I was doing some Marine Corps arm exercises that Abigail taught me from her brother's Good ol' days at boot-camp. I couldn't find any instructables for these, so I can't share them here, but they are called "Sungods" and "Chain-breakers" so ask your closest Marine if he knows how to do them. ;) But I was soon rather tired of the monotony of just sitting there, and then my dear friend Julia showed me a series of Youtube videos that I am now a sworn fan of. They are part of a series called "Blogilates" done by a woman named Cassey Ho who is just so peppy and encouraging that you feel as skinny as she is before the workout has even begun. The workouts are balanced, healthy, and fairly easy in a ouch-that-hurts-but-golly-it's-good-for-me kind of way. Some of them are even done to music. :D You can find printouts for lots of her workouts here.
I did some of this one this morning..... Ouch. :D
My favorite videos (that I've tried) are:
(Fairly easy, but watch out for the leg circles. Ouch.)
(Trying this is just a couple minutes)
(Following it up with this if I'm not dead. ;)
I will warn you and say that she wears work-out clothes and some of her outfits (as in the Bootyful workout) are not guy-friendly. I personally don't have a problem working out with these videos as I'm totally dying there on the floor and not even paying attention. But I would advise against doing these while brothers are around. :D Still, I have found these workouts to be fun, quick, and effective.
Though my arms are still very jiggly, I am already seeing definition between the Marine workouts and these videos. Hurrah! I am adding sit-ups to my routine as well, because I realized yesterday that I honestly have no stomach muscles. Really. It's pitiful. So I am on a roll to change that, because I consider stomach muscles essential to life as a Mama. (someday)
Another thing Mama does (and that I do rather often as well) are a series by Teresa Tapp called T-Tapp. They are workouts that focus on no-impact strength and core-training, and are really healthy and balanced as well. I love the fact that Teresa Tapp was a physical therapist so she knows what's what and how to align the body correctly and all that. These videos are such stress-relievers, and relatively quick. (Basic Plus takes 15 minutes.)
Step Away
Hit the Floor
(synonymous with killer pain ;)
You can read up all about T-Tapp at the website....
Anyway, these are some of the things I have been doing and enjoying. We have an elliptical machine as well, but in a lot of cases I'd just rather go on a walk, but it is a great thing to have for rainy days, or the days you don't have enough time to go for an hour walk and have to get it done quickly.
My target-areas to work on in the next while are:
Abs
Arms
Legs
What are yours, and what sorts of exercises do you like to do? Plus, have any of you tried Zumba, and does it actually work besides being fun to do? :D
With Definitely Aching Abs and Thighs,
Rachel
I just went and checked out the bootyfull video. My word! I cannot feel my backside anymore! OW!
ReplyDeleteBut...................Anyway! Thanks for sharing! I got a laugh and some BIG TIME encouragement from this post! So, thank you! =)
I totally feel your pain. Um....literally. I did the Squats and THEN Bootyful and I can hardly hobble down the stairs. Something this intense has gotta work! ;)
DeleteMy Uncle is a Marine! And he is visiting us tomorrow, so maybe I should ask him about the "Sungods" and "Chain-breakers". ;)
ReplyDeleteAs for Zumba, I've never tried it myself, but I know that Mandisa (CCM singer) does it and she says it works.
Hey Rachel!
ReplyDeleteI just want to encourage you to not give up! What you are doing is the right thing, and you are going to look and feel so great soon!
One thing to keep in mind is that a good exercise program is not just for losing weight and firming up, but for creating a heathier lifestyle for yourself everyday.
Although I don't need to lose weight, I still try to exercise, even if it's just working on my arm strength for ten min. each day. I have to be careful, though, because I really don't want my arm muscles to look like Jillian Michel's, so last summer I started cutting down on that exercise a little :) (sometimes it just feels good to break a sweat)
Eating right is also a good thing, while you're cutting down on your flour and sugar intake, try to replace it with something else, like a huge salad for lunch with nuts for protein.

Great links and workouts Rachel!
ReplyDeleteI agree with the fresh air, but we live in the city and it's too dangerous to go out (and can't drive somewhere nicer to walk everyday), so I try to sit in the sunlight for awhile when it's out. :) It helps at least.
I jog on our eliptical walker every other day for 30 min., and work out on our wii or with one of our workout video's the other days 30-60 min - always in the mornings. If I'm really energetic I'll do some more jogging or get on the wii again for 15 min. later in the day.
My hardest time isn't the exercising so much as not giving in to cravings and munchies. So self control is what I'm working on mostly.
I'm so proud of you for all the hard work you are putting in to helping you body get healthy Rachel! Keep it up sweetie! :D {Hugs}
Love ya!
~The Other Rachel! ;)
Another interesting and informative post! I love walking and could easily walk, and walk, and walk! I'm working on getting in some kind of physical exercise everyday. I'll usually walk, jump on our rebounder and do some weight lifting/pushups/crunches. I'm working on getting definition, as well as just more fit. I like Fitness Blender.com's workouts. They are very good aside from some clothing issues like you mentioned about the other videos. My favorite thing to do is put on a Netflixs movie that's at least 30 minutes and jump on the rebounder, do jumping jacks and other cardio while it's playing. Makes the time go by really fast.
ReplyDeleteI am going to keep those videos in mind. Thank you for sharing, I got a lot of ideas from you. I am working on some of the same areas as you, so if these are working for you I might as well give them a shot.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite excersize is like yours, walking. I could walk everywhere, unless it is below zero outside. Or bike ride or roller skate.
Again, thank you for being willing to share all this.
I gotta say I love Blogilates. She's just so encouraging and the music helps a lot. Have you tried her killer thigh workout? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BcPp-lUMIA It's really, really good. Besides using her, I do a treadmill routine everyday which consists of jogging for 20min, running for 20min, and then brisk walking for 20min. I put a playlist together for myself which has songs that I can jog, run or walk to the beat. It sounds silly, but it really helps you keep up the pace. The biggest problem for me I think is resisting the cravings. Exercising is fun for me, but it's all I can do sometimes to resist that bowl of ice cream. Being on a gluten and sugar free diet helps, and if I'm strict with that it rules out a lot of unhealthy foods. Thanks for the encouraging posts!
