La Vie Est Belle 2015: Inspiration for the Year to Come

A New Year is such a delicious thing. Old years (while full of blessings, joy, and delight) are full of pain, mistakes, past-darkness, and fears. Not that the bad outweighs the good. At this time last year, I was unpublished, unemployed, and wondering what on earth I meant to do for money. Exactly twelve months later, I am well-established as a nanny, have two novels independently published, a novella more or less traditionally published, and a children's book ready to make the rounds. I went to Romania and came back, I traveled to work two summer camps, my best friend and best big brother got married, I had a whirlwind 24-hour jaunt to DC to see my other best friend after 2 1/2 years apart, and I fulfilled a long-held dream of acting as Stylist for a client or two. Another close friend got married, so many became engaged, babies were born everywhere, and God has continued to provide for our needs in miraculous ways.  So while twenty-fourteen was a hugely happy year full of new paths, new accomplishments, new jobs and relationships and lessons and faithfulness, I am also conscious that it was a year of turmoil for many people. I think of the unrest in Russia and Ukraine, Syria, Israel, the riots and mobs over racial matters in our country, the terror of ISIS and the many sadistic crimes it has committed...I think of several people who will not be living 2015 and the empty spaces they leave in the lives of their families and friends. Twenty-fourteen was a BIG year. For me, it was a good year. But I am tired of those twelve-months. Tired in a way I have seldom been tired before. It's funny how finishing with your tail whipped in a marathon and finishing triumphant feel nearly the same: you're still winded and breathless and ready to rest. It's time to bury 2014 in the gentle, winter snow (which has yet to appear) and to look forward with joyful anticipation to the fresh year ahead and all God intends to do in my life for His glory in it.

I have goals marked out for 2015, but enough about that in a different post. For now, I will give you the gift some of the beautiful images that have begun to serve as inspiration for this infant year due any day now. I have let myself wander through Pinterest in my Christmas break, pulling from here and there images that inspire me creatively, stylistically, spiritually, and practically. The funny thing about nearly every one of these pictures is its simplicity. I think I'm craving a rest from the craziness that was 2014. So funny how your subconscious tells on you! One of my main goals for 2015 is "Less of okay, more of excellent," in many many aspects of life. Including the things I allow to crowd my life. The simplifying begins with a series of photos I have given myself time to enjoy:

What is your gift to yourself before 2015 starts?

(you can find these images and more on my "Essentially Rachel" board)

Cuz I know you need a laugh.

Busyness is never an excuse for anything so please pardon me while I don't make excuses that don't exist...
....
...
....
Anyway.
...
...
....

Right. Now that that's out of the way. I thought I'd give y'all a dose of my laughter. And by my laughter I mean things that have been making me laugh...not...yeah...not that. I love to laugh (isn't that on my profile and About the Lass pages? I think so.) and I love to make other people laugh. I laugh at myself and at other people and I think having a sense of humor is the biggest sanity-saver we've been given in this world. Having friends who possess good senses of humor is the second biggest sanity-saver, and thank God I have both. I literally do thank Him--often. I'm going to sort this post by category so here we go:

Me without You (Singleness)

I’ve been single most of my life. I have never really dated a lot compared to most of my peers. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’ve had my heart ripped out of my chest and found myself in a daze of “heart break warfare” complete with sleep binges and nights filled with ice cream topped with my own tears. Sadly, Taylor Swift wasn’t around then to really make me feel understood. But, that was one time and I’m lucky I only had to experience that once. But through my life, family, friends, nail technicians, and even strangers often always find a way to bring up my awesome single life.
9. Have you tried Christian Mingle? Have you seen the couples on those commercials? They wear clothes from 1999 and the guys all have comb overs.
I laughed indecently hard over these two blog posts, sent to me by my awesome friend, Katie. Katie is my life-saver and we sent each other things like this to make ourselves laugh and avoid self-pity, lonesomeness, hilarity, bitterness, forlornity, etc. (And I'm only half-kidding when I say this)

From the Movies and Pinterest Sarcasm & Wit :

Thurrrrr y'go. Laugh, snort, chuckle, snerk. You know the routine.
(And if you didn't read those single posts, go back NOW and do so.)

Catch you kids later!

Love is a pox...

I seldom indulge in doubt.

But there are some things as a kid that the adults said were "givens" in life that I'd always written off as exaggerations. I'd always doubted a certain set of things. You know the sort. "Time will go so fast ten years will pass like a month." Really? Come on now-I'm not that dumb. The "time-flies" promise was something I always denied. At seventeen, eighteen, I was not ready to accept it. Not quite yet. But my reticence to acknowledge there might be something in it after all was weakening, though I wasn't aware.

Because this year has been huge in one way: A pox has broken out. The pox.

When you're fourteen years old you sit on the bed with mama beside you and talk about "the future" in comfortable terms of far-awayness. You sigh and lament the fact that there's nobody around to marry, were you old enough anyway. "Don't worry," mama says. "Once it starts happening you won't know what has started. Everyone will start dropping like flies."

You snort.

You chuckle in a "Yeah, like that will every happen" way.

You forget about it.

Until you're twenty. And then. Then. Then the pox does break out.

After coming home from a trip for the second time this fall and finding (for the second time!) that another friend has found herself a "matchless match" (and what's up with this happening every time I leave town?) I felt rather kooky. Was it just me or was there an inordinate amount of "matches" being made this year? How many was it? An alarming amount, it seemed. Could it be that Mama was right and once it started it wouldn't stop? Ahem.
This afternoon I sat down and decided to count--for sanity's sake--how many friends and acquaintances of mine had begun a relationship {or were bordering on it} this year? The total took me by storm.

14.

14 couples.

That makes 28 if you're counting. But who's counting?

28 people I know (more or less) who have coupled off this year. And this isn't counting the people I know who have gotten married or are engaged currently.

O.o

I feel...

...not jealousy.

More like bewilderment.

Confusion and a little kick-back defense to find that those adults were right all along.

Love is a pox. A pox the whole world succumbs to by and by.

Well jeegley-clambake. This is a to-do.

It's one of those cases where you find the world flying out of control, out of your grasp, and growing up suddenly looks rather serious and cock-eyed and not at all like you thought it would be. It's exciting because obviously some things are finally moving along and little people are growing up and meeting people and loving people and marrying people and having more little people. But it's going so fast.
A busy summer and fall of campaigning, ministry, and writing.

I finally slow down, turn around, and three of my best friends are in relationships.

Several good friends follow suit.

I hear tell rumors of the same happening in my extended circles.

What on earth happened? I'll tell you. We grew up. And once you grow up beautiful things start to happen. Beautiful, scary, adventurous things. It's real now and I find the adults were right.

...about love.

...about time.

...about life.

I have seen things change so fast it'll give you whiplash. I actually started a Pinterest-board because of this new revelation of having grown up. It's inspiring new ideas, new thoughts, new inspirations. So here's to adventure. Here's to wearing a neck-brace if you have to. Here's to buckling your seat-belt, checking your parachute, and waiting for the drop.

Here's to a bit of daring.

brown-paper packages tied up with string...

I don't know about in your families, but in ours we have lots of birthdays in the summertime. Being the campaign, I'll miss my 20th birthday. (July 20th) Perhaps I will fold a pamphlet into a hat and wear it on my head to celebrate...or maybe not. ;)
This lead me to wondering and thinking about fun ways to wrap presents. :) Here is some inspiration for you and I!
Homemade paper-flowers to use atop gifts!

A cute twist on the traditional brown-paper package! :)

Love it! Queen of Hearts gift-wrap--perfect for a friend who loves Alice in Wonderland!

Whoa! String-art packages! :) I likes it.

And of course a Rachel-Gift could not be complete without peacock feathers. Absolutely brilliant <3 I love it. I want a gift wrapped in peacock feathers for my birthday! ;)

I don't even know how they did this one, but I think it's awesome!

Everyone has plenty of newspaper, right?

Aw! Perfect for the musician in your life.

What are some of your favorite ways to wrap a gift? :)

Shimmering Threads

Because sometimes it's important to recount the awesome blessings woven into the tapestry of life...

Sarah won a 2nd Blogoversary giveaway in which she won not 1, but 5 prizes!!!

Daniel and I are going off to the deep South for a month to work on several primary campaigns (long story! :) I'm not sure how much blogging I'll be able to get in, but I am thinking about opening an FB page to keep updates going. :)

Abigail is visiting and we are having a deal of fun, such as Being Pounced in bed, and giggling over the smell of each others hands. :P (Lemon and soap and Mexican? :P)

On Monday I've got an elaborate Box Hill plan with Morgan and Katie who I haven't seen enough of this past year. We're going wild. ;) Actually, we're going historical. It includes a photo-shoot, and a picnic! :)

My cousin Matthew was in an accident today and escaped unhurt, except for some glass shard-cuts. (Huge praise here!)

I got to go shopping for several clothing items I need for my trip, and spent a shocking amount of money on myself. ($91! I felt awful till Mama assured me it was okay--I never spend money in that way.)

And while I was shopping I got two pairs of shoes for under $20.00! (Score!)

Levi is learning to say "no" and "what's that?"

We've had beautiful, wonderful, magical thunderstorms the past several nights.

The moon is nearly full.

(and I have black beetles dropping down my back from the ceiling! Ew.)

Goldberry hijacked my Summer Reading List and made me very happy. :) More on that in another post.

Dombey & Son in a hardback, illustrated edition came to my house wrapped up in brown paper and string via the Abigail post, from said Goldberry, and made my heart go pitter-patter-flutter. <3

I've been using Tresemme "Touchable Softness" shampoo and my hair feels marvelous.

What are your "shimmering threads" for this week? :)

DIY Face-Mud Sugar Scrub!

I made face-mud last night! For Christmas my aunt made sugar-scrubs for the girls and I. They were flavored (er...scented? I always end up tasting it :P) peppermint and lavender, and I loved them to pieces. Somehow it doesn't seem right to be rubbing your face with more oil than is already there, but I consistently saw improvement in my complexion and softening of my skin. :)

But then my sugar-scrub ran out.

And then I joined Pinterest.

And then I found a picture of face-mud and it intrigued me. What was it? From the picture I assumed one simply scrounged up some sand and soil and all that and rubbed then on their face. I mean...dirt has minerals, right? Or so my train of thought chugged along. So I did a quick Google search and found out that face-mud is actually a form of sugar-scrub.

"Ohyesocourse" (pssst. That's said in a Mr. Darcy voice, you know.)

Of course once I saw how easy the project was I knew I had to make it. Face-mud is a sugar-and-coffee scrub! Oh yeah! Perfect. I love sugar and I love coffee...and I know my skin will too. ;) adelynStone has complete instructions on the making of Face-mud. You can find them here if you want the whole to-do, but I'll go on and tell you how I did it. :)

DIY Face-Mud:
  • 1 cup sugar (I used brown but you can use white, natural, cane, etc.)
  • 5 Tbs. ground coffee (not de-caf. The caffeine is part of the skin benefit. :)
  • 1/4 cup oil (olive, canola, etc.)
  • 1 tsp. peppermint extract
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
Mix sugar and coffee together. Mix oil and extracts together. Add dry to wet ingredients and stir till moistened. If too soupy, add more coffee or sugar. Store in Tupperware containers.

It's that easy, and it smells divine! I used mine last night and went to bed smelling heavenly. I will warn you though, the coffee-grounds make rather a mess in the sink so be sure you rinse it out well after washing your face! This was such a fun (and cheap) project and would make an excellent gift for a coffee-loving friend. :)

What To Do With Your Hair...

I get tired quickly of doing my hair the same way, so I'm always on the lookout for new and pretty hairstyles. Pinterest is a great place to find them--here are some of my favorites, and some I'd love to try! :) I think it's a good idea to try at least one new style a week. Maybe try to wear your hair a different way every Sunday or another day of the week. It keeps you from getting in a rut. :)

This is so beautiful and it looks really easy! Just a French-braid starting at one side of the head and ending at the other...as far as I can tell the end of the braid is just pinned back beneath the rest of the hair.

Just beautiful! I'm thinking they curled the hair and then pinned it loosely in several places...

Oh my goodness! How cute is that? Looks to me like French braids that are pulled and loosened and then bound back with the ends curled. :) Love the rosebuds.

Very pretty, but I'm telling you I can't get my hair to look this modern! :D I'm thinking there was a lot of hairspray and gel and stuff to get that look.

So elegant but simple. This doesn't look hard at all...actually it's funny...this lady looks like Gwyneth Paltrow from the back.

Ah! Very pretty. Looks easy too! *Score*! ;)

The water-fall braid--this is easy and pretty too. There are many tutorials for this style online. :)

What styles do you want to try? Which is your favorite of these?

The best of "Keep Calm" :)

There are some silly things that make me happy. What silly things, you might ask? Okay. It's confession time. I am currently in love with:

"Keep Calm" pictures

Here are some of my favorites! :D

The best! :D

Precisely.

Brilliant advice--only, I love sneezing!

Need I say more? :)

You wouldn't get this one unless you'd seen a certain news clip... :D

Have a great evening--I hope you are getting some of the gorgeous weather we've had around here. :) I declare it feels like Spring--I'm wearing a light, brown cotton dress and loving it. :)
